Whitewater Falls Overlook

Whitewater Falls Overlook sits at 2,660 feet along Whitewater Way, facing 350° across terrain that drops 547 feet within 600 meters of the site. The overlook is positioned on the Blue Ridge Escarpment, the sharp elevation change between the mountains and the Piedmont that gives rise to the falls in this area. Upper Whitewater Falls, on the North Carolina side, drops 411 feet, and Lower Whitewater Falls in South Carolina falls another 400 feet below that. The steep slopes and rock cliffs here stay cool and moist, supporting wildflowers, salamanders, ferns, mosses, and fungi. Because access to the escarpment is difficult and the terrain rugged, much of the surrounding area sees few visitors and remains undeveloped, though the falls themselves draw heavy crowds at midday and on holidays; morning or evening visits are recommended. Easley is 28.5 miles east-southeast, Greenville is 37.2 miles east-southeast, and Anderson is 41.9 miles south-southeast. The Whitewater Falls Viewing Platform is the next lookout along the byway.
