Placed by Col. Charles E. Phelps, commanding 7th Maryland Infantry, part of the "Maryland Brigade". On May 8, 1864 the brigade attacked the Confederate line on Laurel Hill and were repulsed after heavy fighting. Phelps would receive the Medal of Honor.
