Carlos Campbell Overlook sits at 2,010 feet along Newfound Gap Road (US 441), facing due north, with the land dropping 280 feet within 600 meters of the viewpoint. It is named for the director of the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce in the 1930s and is the first overlook reached when driving south from Sugarlands Visitor Center. Holy Butt is visible to the north-northwest at 3.2 miles, rising to 2,934 feet. Looking closely, a dense thicket of pines can be seen on the ridgeline, having grown in after a wildfire burned the area in 2016. The towns of Maryville, Knoxville, and Farragut lie to the west-northwest, between about 26 and 39 miles away, though they are not necessarily visible from the overlook itself. Sunrise and sunset times shift across the year, with sunrise as early as 06:19 at the June solstice and as late as 07:41 at the December solstice, when sunset comes at 17:25. Newfound Gap Overlook precedes this stop along the byway.
