Highlands Overlook

Highlands Overlook sits at mile 43 of 196 along the Hells Canyon byway, at an elevation of 8,221 feet. The terrain drops 705 feet within 600 meters of the overlook, and the view faces 240°, roughly toward the southwest. Seven peaks and one waterfall are visible: West Aneroid Peak to the south-southwest at 3.5 miles (9,178 ft), Hurwal Divide to the west at 4.2 miles (9,781 ft), Chief Joseph Mountain and Point Joseph to the west-northwest at 4.4 miles (9,611 ft and 9,622 ft), Ice Falls to the west-southwest at 4.6 miles (7,706 ft), and Hurwal Divide Southwest and Craig Mountain to the west-southwest at 4.9 miles (9,502 ft and 9,183 ft). The facing direction is oriented about 30 degrees off square from due sunset, so the overlook takes in evening light across the ridgeline. Enterprise lies 12.4 miles to the north-northwest, Union is 33.6 miles west, and Baker City is 46.4 miles southwest. Valley Overlook precedes this stop along the byway, and Summit Overlook follows it.
