Summit Overlook

Summit Overlook sits at mile 43 of the Hells Canyon byway, at 8,254 feet, facing 240 degrees. The terrain drops 942 feet within 600 meters of the overlook. The view faces toward sunset, offset 30 degrees from square with the horizon. Peaks visible to the west and southwest include Bonneville Mountain at 1.9 miles, West Aneroid Peak at 3.4 miles, Hurwal Divide at 4.2 miles, and Chief Joseph Mountain and Point Joseph, both at 4.4 miles to the west-northwest. Ice Falls, a waterfall, is visible to the west-southwest at 4.6 miles, with Hurwal Divide Southwest and Craig Mountain further along the same general direction. Enterprise lies 12.4 miles to the north-northwest, Union is 33.6 miles west, and Baker City is 46.4 miles southwest. Highlands Overlook precedes this stop along the byway, and Royal Purple Overlook follows. At the June solstice, sunset occurs at 20:41; at the December solstice, sunset comes at 16:10, with the facing direction placing the setting sun within view during evening hours across the seasons listed.
