Historic Viewing Terrace

Historic Viewing Terrace sits at 5,232 feet along the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway, facing 60 degrees, with land dropping 296 feet within 600 meters of the terrace. That orientation puts the view generally toward sunrise, roughly 30 degrees off square from due east. Four named features are visible: Eagle Mountain to the north-northeast at 4.0 miles (5,215 ft), Echo Peak to the northeast at 4.8 miles (4,750 ft), Silver Mountain to the north-northeast at 5.4 miles (5,388 ft), and Boulder Hill, a viewpoint, to the north-northeast at 6.5 miles (5,301 ft). Rapid City lies 18.0 miles to the northeast, Box Elder 26.3 miles northeast, and Sturgis 37.2 miles north. Sunrise and sunset times shift across the year, from a 05:12 sunrise at the June solstice to a 07:26 sunrise at the December solstice, with sunset ranging from 20:41 in June to 16:20 in December. The terrace is positioned along the byway between Borglum View Terrace, the previous lookout, and Breezy Point Overlook & Picnic Area, the next stop ahead.
