The Point Overlook

The Point Overlook sits at 3,235 feet on Skyline Drive, facing 300 degrees with the land dropping 567 feet within 600 meters of the edge. Upper Big Creek Falls is visible to the west at 0.6 miles, with Peters Point beyond it at 1.3 miles. Further out, Devils Tanyard and Grindstone Mountain rise to the northwest and west at roughly 4.5 to 4.7 miles, followed by Smith Mountain to the west-northwest at 5.0 miles. Dovel Mountain and The Pinnacle extend the view to the northwest at 6.2 and 7.4 miles. The facing direction points toward the sunset, about 30 degrees off square, so late-day light crosses the ridgeline rather than sitting directly behind it. Sunset falls near 19:26 at the March equinox, 20:42 at the June solstice, 19:13 at the September equinox, and 16:57 at the December solstice. Harrisonburg lies 22.1 miles to the west, Charlottesville 30.0 miles south, and Staunton 39.6 miles west-southwest.
