Bigfoot Pass Overlook

Bigfoot Pass Overlook sits at 2,674 feet on the Badlands Loop Scenic Byway, facing 270 degrees toward the sunset. The terrain drops 158 feet within 600 meters of the overlook. From here, Panorama Point is visible 0.7 miles to the west at 2,734 feet, with Homestead Overlook further out to the west-northwest at 6.7 miles and 2,891 feet. Hurley Butte and Kelier Butte rise to the southwest at 7.2 and 9.4 miles, at 2,594 and 2,538 feet respectively, and Pinnacles Overlook lies 10.7 miles west-northwest at 3,202 feet. Sunset times vary through the year, from 20:35 at the June solstice to 16:14 at the December solstice, with the facing aligned directly toward the western horizon. Wall is the nearest town, 16.7 miles to the northwest, followed by Philip at 25.3 miles northeast and Kadoka at 26.9 miles east. The site carries historical significance tied to the events of December 1890, when Hunkpapa Lakota fleeing after the death of Sitting Bull joined Chief Big Foot's band nearby before their journey toward Pine Ridge and the events at Wounded Knee Creek. Panorama Point precedes this stop on the byway, and White River Valley Overlook follows.
