The Door overlook sits at 2,613 feet along the Badlands Loop Scenic Byway, reached by a wheelchair-accessible quarter-mile boardwalk leading through a break in the Badlands Wall. The terrain drops 139 feet within 600 meters of the overlook, and the view faces 120°, oriented generally toward sunrise. Beyond the boardwalk, the maintained trail ends and continues onto Badlands bedrock, marked by yellow posts for the primitive portion; travel past this point is at the visitor's own risk. Kadoka lies 21.3 miles east-northeast, Wall is 22.3 miles northwest, and Philip is 23.0 miles northeast. Sunrise and sunset times vary by season: around 06:52 and 19:00 at the March equinox, 05:07 and 20:34 at the June solstice, 06:36 and 18:47 at the September equinox, and 07:19 and 16:14 at the December solstice. The Window lookout precedes this stop on the byway, and Big Badlands Overlook follows it.
