Chessmen Ridge Overlook sits at mile 7 of 8 along the Cedar Breaks Scenic Byway, facing 210° across terrain that drops 938 feet within 600 meters of the rim. At an elevation of 10,455 feet, the overlook looks south-southwest toward Point Supreme, its overlook, and the Cedar Breaks National Monument Visitor Center, all within about 1.3 miles. Spectra Point and its viewpoint lie slightly farther in the same direction, with Wasatch Rampart and Ramparts Viewpoint to the southwest and The Bartizan and Bartizan Arch to the west-southwest. Blowhard Mountain rises to the south-southwest at 3.0 miles and 10,640 feet. A parking area serves the site, which connects to the Chessmen Ridge Spur Trail leading to a bristlecone pine grove and the Alpine Pond Loop Trail. Cedar City lies 13.0 miles west-northwest, with Hurricane and Washington farther southwest. The overlook is positioned between Sunset View Overlook and Point Supreme Overlook on the byway. Seasonal daylight ranges from a sunrise of 06:11 and sunset of 20:57 at the June solstice to a sunrise of 07:43 and sunset of 17:17 at the December solstice.

Chessmen Ridge Overlook · National Park Service

Overlooking Chessmen Ridge, this overlook is centrally located on the rim overlooking the Cedar Breaks Amphitheater. It is the highest elevation overlook in the park at 10,461ft and offers stunning views of the ridge and surrounding formations. The overlook features one of the larger parking lots and can be used to access a bristlecone pine grove and the Alpine Pond Loop Trail by the Chessmen Ridge Spur Trail beginning at the overlook parking lot. The area is open year-round, but access does vary throughout the year depending upon weather. Once the park road is closed to vehicle access (normally in November each year), the overlook is only accessible by snowshoe, cross-country skies, or snowmobiles.
