Sunset View Overlook

Sunset View Overlook sits at mile 5 of 8 along the Cedar Breaks Scenic Byway, at an elevation of 10,335 feet, with the land dropping 675 feet within 600 meters of the rim. The view faces 240 degrees, oriented toward sunset, roughly 30 degrees off due west. Cedar Breaks National Monument Visitor Center, Point Supreme, and Point Supreme Overlook lie to the southwest at 0.7 miles, with Spectra Point and its viewpoint slightly farther southwest and west-southwest near the one-mile mark. Wasatch Rampart and Ramparts Viewpoint are visible to the west-southwest at 1.4 and 1.5 miles, while Meadow Hill, The Bartizan, and Bartizan Arch appear to the west and west-northwest between 1.9 miles out, ranging from about 8,591 to 9,768 feet in elevation. Cedar City is 13.3 miles west-northwest; Hurricane and Washington lie farther southwest. Sunset times shift through the year, from 20:57 at the June solstice to 17:17 at the December solstice. The overlook connects Spectra Point Viewpoint to the previous stop and Chessmen Ridge Overlook to the next. Access is by the Sunset Trail or a small roadside parking area; once the park road closes in winter, typically in November, the site is reachable only by snowshoe, cross-country ski, or snowmobile.
