Albright Visitor Center

Here you can gather park information, orient yourself to the rest of the park (including road conditions, and campground and lodge availability), shop for souvenirs, explore exhibits to learn more about the wildlife and history of Yellowstone, join a ranger program, pick up a fishing permit (fees are payable by debit or credit card), or use the restrooms.

The Albright Visitor Center is located at Mammoth Hot Springs, five miles south of the North Entrance at the northern part of the upper loop of the Grand Loop Road. It is housed in one of the old stone buildings of Fort Yellowstone, a US Army fort built during the early days of the national park.

Albright Visitor Center (286 words) A cement sidewalk leads to the visitor center, located in a 2-story, T-shaped building with a basement and second floor, made of light brown, grey, and beige, rough-cut large blocks of stone. The gabled roof is made of reddish-orange, half-round shaped clay tiles. The building has 4 chimneys and 3 dormer windows. The first and second levels have tall windows with 12 panes of glass; a triangular area surrounding one half-circle window at center on the second level. The basement’s wide, horizontal windows, are covered by vertical wrought iron bars. The second story has eleven windows across the front of the building. In the front of the building are three, 4-foot wide cement stairs with wrought iron railings on both left and right that lead to a porch that spans the entire front of the building. The center set of steps leads directly to the visitor center entrance under signage that reads “Horace M. Albright Visitor Center.” On the far right is an accessible ramp. The stairs and accessible ramp lead to a porch on the first level with 3 sets of double doors: on the left, a staff entrance; in the middle, the visitor center entrance; on the right, doors marked “not an entrance.” Two ash-colored wooden benches flank the center doors. The porch is shaded by a roof supported by stone pillars; the double-door entrance to the visitor center is just 6 feet forward. In the back, on the left side of the building, a ramp and set of stairs lead to the backcountry permit office. The visitor center is shaded by a large spruce and two cottonwood trees at left and right. Inside features include an information desk staffed by park rangers, exhibits, and restrooms.
