Old Faithful Visitor Education Center 473 words You are standing in front of the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center. Exterior features of this wide structure include brown composite shingles, multiple roof lines, and a multi-story glass section in its center. The triangular gable roof shading this tall glass-front section is supported by steel beams; wood and glass double doors provide an entrance to the building at porch level. The sloping porch roof below, and on either side of, the central gable and entrance doors is supported by several large stone pillars. The cement porch spans left and right in front of the entrance. As you approach the building through the large circular cement plaza in front of the building, you will encounter a large sign standing beside a flagpole flying the United States flag. Text on the sign reads: “Old Faithful Visitor Education Center.” Attached on the sign’s left side is the arrowhead-shaped National Parks Service emblem featuring a single sequoia tree standing beside a snow-capped mountain and one lone bison. The stairs leading to the porch form a wide concave arc spanning nearly the entire width of the building. On the far left of this arc, one narrow section of stairs offers handrails on both sides. If you chose to enter somewhere along the wider stair section, please note that there are no handrails. You must also take care to avoid a pile of boulders located at the base of the stairs slightly left of the entrance doors. The boulders are surrounded by metal railings on three sides with the side facing the plaza left open. Another such boulder display is located in the plaza’s center. There is also a wheelchair ramp located to the right of the wall enclosing the right side of the wider stair section. This ramp curves upward from the plaza to the porch. A round metal button emblazoned with a drawing of a wheelchair and the words “Press to Open” is located on the outer frame of the right-hand entrance door. You will also encounter a large rubber mat in front of the doors. A small sign on each door gives the hours the visitor center is open. There are three benches on the porch--one to the left of the entrance and two to the right--positioned against the building’s front wall. More benches are placed in various spots behind the building, which overlooks Old Faithful geyser. If you prefer to view the geyser from indoors, there are several benches in front of the floor-to-ceiling glass window on the center’s rear wall. This viewing area is nearly a mirror image of the multi-story entrance area. Other indoor features include an information desk staffed by park rangers, interactive exhibits, an educational bookstore, and an auditorium. Public restrooms and drinking fountains are located to your right as you step inside the entrance. END OF MESSAGE
