Madison Information Station and Trailside Museum

Located about halfway between Old Faithful and West Yellowstone, you can stop here for park information as visitors have been doing since 1930. The structure is an example of "parkitecture" or designing a building in a way that reflects the surrounding ecosystem. You can also shop for souvenirs in the park store or use the restrooms.

Located just south of Madison Junction. Madison can be reached from two different directions, so check your map carefully before driving.

Madison Information Station 226 words The Madison Information Station and Trailside Museum is a one-story wood and stone structure with shingled roof set at the edge of a meadow at the junction where the Firehole and Gibbon Rivers join to form Madison River. A triangular gable roof supported by several heavy logs shades the building’s entrance, a single 12-pane glass door located toward the left end of the structure. This entrance is flanked by irregular stone pillars; tree profiles and diamond patterns have been sawn into the ends of the flat vertical boards hanging just above the door and the two large windows to its left. There is also an entrance door on the right side into the Yellowstone Association bookstore. The approach to the building from the gravel path in front of the building slopes slightly but is accessible with assistance. You will encounter a flat stone slab outside the entrance and a small mat placed just outside the door. There is also a small ramp on both the front and back doors; these entries are wheelchair accessible. A sign standing between two windows to the right of the entrance reads: “Yellowstone Association Park Store. Inspire. Educate. Preserve.” In the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day, there is also a sign hanging over the left side entrance--the National Park Service entrance--that reads “Junior Ranger Station.” END OF MESSAGE
